From there the clay is carefully trimmed, dried, and burnished smooth before going into the electric kiln. The second firing is done in my outdoor kiln where real fire slowly brings the wine stem to over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. One at a time, each stem is removed from the heat and decorated by laying strands of horse tail, feathers, and a sprinkle of sugar on the surface which burns away and leaves stunning carbon markings in the pores of the clay. The final step seals the clay with liquid quartz to make the stem fully waterproof.
